essay_writing_serviceEquality is an integral part or component of any society. Parity should be observed in matters concerning race, opinion, and gender. People should not be subjected to discrimination if they belong to a particular race. This provision was specifically brought up to counter the racial discrimination of individuals who came from the minority races (Shelton & Colon, 2010). The minority races in America include the African-Americans, Hispanic and Latino members of the community. As far as gender is concerned, all people should be treated equally, regardless of whether they are male or female (Shelton & Colon, 2010). Members of the community should also have an equal opportunity to express their opinion. One of the most remarkable initiatives aimed at ensuring equality in the society includes the civil rights movement.

The civil rights movement was aimed at ensuring equal treatment of the minorities and women in the society. In addition, the civil rights movement sought to make sure that the lesbian, the gay, bisexual and transgender individuals were treated equally (Adamson, 2009). The most notable occurrence or event during the civil rights strife was the Brown vs. Board of Education (1954) court case. Upon its ruling, the trial ended the rampant segregation that was practiced in schools across America (Shelton & Colon, 2010). This case was effectual as it targeted the education sector, which was important to all members of the society. The lack of equality in this particular segment of the community meant further inequality in the future. The media coverage was also highly focused on this matter, which is considered the event that triggered the civil rights movement.

Currently, the American society can be defined as ‘a work in progress’. Significant steps have been taken since the civil rights movement era enhancing equality in the society. However, regular reports indicate some cases of discrimination with racial segregation being the most prominent. Most complaints usually mention the mistreatment of minorities by the criminal justice system. According to Heather Adamson (2009), disparities have been noted in the sentencing of white and African-Africans with the latter receiving harsher rulings. As far as my career is concerned, racial discrimination may lead to the lack of a job opportunity in the future. For this reason, the situation should be dealt with accordingly to ensure an equal society.
